Iguanas, Let's Be Wild Photo Challenge - Scary, mystery fish ecuador estero, Scorpion, snakes, Waspo, Wild Weekly Photo Challenge- Scary
Great news: Let’s Be Wild selected one of the images of the turtles as this week’s first place winner! I’m stoked! Go see the winning images HERE. Now that “New Beginnings” is officially finished, a fun theme follows; I certainly cross paths with plenty of photo-ops that illustrate SCARY! Although few things scare me, I suspect that a few of these images will be creepy to some of you!
When one spends a large segment of the time in the outdoors, there are many photo ops. Hank, Marie and I gave this rattlesnake (below) wide berth as it crossed the road from one rice field to the other. (Costa Rica)
The angry tides spit this docile sea snake onto the beach. Although it’s not an aggressive snake, its venom is quite dangerous! (Above) I prefer to stalk the no-poisonous snakes like the one below that was foraging in the hibiscus hedge!
- I learned years ago that this lovely chartreuse critter has a nasty sting. Yowch! My hand tingled for days!

I caught this fish in brackish water near the Pacific Ocean in Ecuador. An odd fish, its eyes were toward the top of its head, and its pectoral fins fluttered out like butterfly wings.

Expecting the side fins to barb me like a catfish, I did not notice the tiny retractable tube-like opening along its spine. The fish “spit’ a milky liquid at me!
The fish flopped off and fell between the big rocks and joined a catfish that had fallen there. Not wanting to risk getting hurt by the rocks, I left the fish there. The next day I climbed back down the rocks to take more photos if possible. ’Something’ had moved the fish to another spot. All that was left of the catfish was its head, but the mystery fish was untouched! To my surprise, the fish was still alive! Several days later, my premonitions proved correct, and the unstable pile of rocks came tumbling down.
I hope you’ve enjoyed seeing a bit of my world; when I am not painting, I enjoy being totally immersed in nature, scary creatures and all! See more posts for the Wild Weekly Photo Challenge “Scary” HERE.

Oh now I remember why I don’t live in the tropics!! Jealous NO MORE!! Lol
ha! you and babs! of course you know/knew that serpents have slithered among us since the days of Eden!
iguanas are docile; it’s rare that one allows a human to get as close as i did to that one. of course there’s a great story that goes with those images of Big Red!
He’s friggin enormous! I wouldhavescreamed for weeks!!
that made me laugh, and i can imagine your classic hollywood girl scream!!!!!
i’m going to have to share that iguana story soon! thanks! z
More like a wail but you would hear it!
i chuckled again that surprises me that you wouldn’t scream and release all of the tension at once!
You would take GREAT DELIGHT in my hysteria !!! I assure you your furniture would not! Where is she?? On top of the fridge! I am a first class coward!
This post has me scared! How can I ever come up with something scary after seeing these photos?
Hugs – B
ha!
the scorpion was in belize (thought they are in all of thsee tropical countries) and big red was in costa rica. the snakes are everywhere, and i suspect you have similar vine snakes in your garden? the fish — right here, though if you caught one, i’d take it off the hook for you!
Ah, but I do take my caught fish off the hook! Thanks though! We do not see many snakes but they are around!
Your post is not showing up on the wild weekly…
thanks! (whoops!) the internet is very sluggish here, and the computer picked this morning for one of those ‘no warning’ updates where it shut down to finish the updates…
i’ll go there now!
thanks for watching my back!
lisa/z
PS. I always thought that a bird had eaten the catfish, yet knew to leave the other alone; I never considered that ‘ugly fish’ might have eaten the catfish. What do you think?
I love your Iguanas. I have been fascinated by their expressive charm.
thanks! they’re really funny to watch! z
I actually like snakes and lizards. LOL I played with them as a little girl all the time!
that doesn’t surprise me!
late last night i watched a short documentary about willie mae buckner. (sp?) wow, was she ever a snake person!
LOL that’s funny
I’m glad I’m not the only one is scared….. All are great shots, z!
congrats on your winning photo….love all of these except the spider web…thats scary
what is it about spider webs that makes so many people jittery?
they’re so beautiful when we see them from afar, but so disarming when we amble into them with no warning!
thanks for adding your feedback!

I scrolled through this rather quickly. I do swat at a scorpion or 2. I also shake out my shoes before wearing.
ja! thank you for taking a walk on the wild side, even if you’d rather have walked way way around this one! z
Great shots and I love lizards – have always done! Spiders? Noooooo……….
Gorgeous photos. The snake gives me the creeps and I think I will stay away from the lizard.
ha HA! i wouldn’t be surprised if the images made you close the page in a hurry!
These are great photographs, I find all of the critters fascinating, would probably want to view at a distance however! Thank you z, just wonderful!
i totally understand; most of my friends – men and women- do not like immersion in the creepy crawly world!
Oh my goodness! How brave you are! I would shriek and run away as quickly as my legs would allow! Thank you for sharing these photos. While I’m not into being one with nature and its many critters, I can appreciate them from a distance because of you.

ha! thanks for your lively comment, and i would probably chuckle as you dashed from the scene! your precious daughters would probably snicker as well – or your reaction would be infectious!
z
Knowing them, as I would be running away, they would grab a critter and begin chasing me with it all while laughing hysterically! It would indeed be a sight to see.
x melissa little
that made me laugh out loud! z
And a seasoned fisherwoman, too! Never cease to amaze
Watch out for those webs!
Nice (scary) shots.
i’ve always loved to fish! my father was an amazing outdoorsman! z
Sorry, had to move VERY quickly trough your blog this time. And when the winter gets tough I am going to think why I am living here and not in the tropics. Really, I am so afraid of snakes, but I have hardly seen any.
Likes the grandmother though..
ha! yes, we can find reasons to be grateful for where we live! i rarely see snakes, but when i do, they definitely get my attention!
you have those amazing reindeer! well, i have the monkeys, so i can’t complain!
z
You’ve got some pretty scary critters in your neck of the woods!
they’re strung out from central america to ecuador! thanks! z
The iguanas are beautiful! I think the wasp and snakes scare me the most.
i think it comes down to avoiding pain, so it’s natural for us to have an instinct to be repelled by wasps, snakes, scorpions…
thanks for your comment!
lisa/z
Eewww,,,,i hate snakes!
I chuckled; sorry to subject you to seeing those unpleasant creatures! Thanks for your comment!
Congratulations on your winning turtle photo. I can cope with cute turtles but I am not sure how brave I would be around the other critters. They are all gorgeous of course.
i’m glad you liked the turtle, and not surprised your reluctance to enjoy the others! gracias!
Many many hugs and congrats on winning 1st place for the 3rd time. Woohoo Lisa!
I love your turtle photos – that’s what brought me over here in the first place.
You’ve gathered an amazing assortment of scary looking creatures in this post.
The one with the long fingers … oh my!
you are too funny! si, his fingers are quite long, though he was a pretty nice houseguest!!!

Those close ups are great photos. Did you have a telephoto lens or did you get up close and personal?
close up and personal! =exce[t for the rattlesnake, i was in a car and leaned out the window! with the other snake, i was in the ‘bushes’ with it! z
I think it was a wise decision to stay in the car for the rattlesnake photo
Very creepy…
