BAHIA DE CARAQUEZ, ECUADOR

While learning a new language, we all have moments that burn in our memories when we mistakenly insert a similar-sounding word in place of the correct one.   The locals in Costa Rica still reminisce (with chuckles) when I stated that I was a man, instead of stating that I was hungry!  Hombre – hambre; oh the difference one vowel makes!  They also laughed when I bluntly stated with strong emphasis, “I NEED A MAN” (to help shovel truckloads of gravel!)

My most-recent Spanish-speaking blunder arrived last night, when University students joined locals and  extranjeros at Museo Bahia de Caraques’s opening reception  of  the Mola Series.  While explaining that the preColumbian Kuna Indians painted the designs on their bodies, I used the word for breakfast instead of naked!

Desayuno.  Desnudo.  Come on, I was close!

Several generous souls in the audience helped me through a few other stumbling blocks, but everyone seemed quite patient and forgiving!

The public reaction to the paintings continues to surprise me!  Color certainly has a positive effect on people, and as Kate Murphy said at the Manta opening, “The paintings smile at you and make you smile back!”   Continue reading →

World-class athletes often reflect on their humble beginnings.  They practiced in quiet surroundings and were encouraged by the people who believed in them.  How empty our lives would be without those wonderful souls who put others first, challenge them to do their best, coach them and cheer them on!  Patient and kind, they are the givers in this world.

Toto, we’re not in Kansas anymore!

This week’s photo challenge is “Inside.“  Short and sweet, my contribution comes from Friday afternoon’s bus ride from Portoviejo (Ecuador) to Cruzita.  The bus ride, though not short or sweet, did provide some interesting photo moments.  The man and his burro is my favorite, shot from the front seat (!) of Cruzita’s ‘ranchero-blaring’ bus! What would we do without paints and cameras and computers and vision and appreciation of the world around us?!!!  Island Traveler asked us to ponder the word, Color, for this week’s challenge.   As always, I was ready for a challenge!

Colors Seem to Fade —  Monochromatic Black Crowned Night Heron

Amos Lee make us ponder how we see colors via a beautiful song titled, Colors;  “When you’re gone, colours seem to fade.”

Paul Simon’s Kodachrome jump starts all of us into a foot-stomping sing-along mood for this week’s Image of Life: COLOR.

DREAMING:  This precious little girl at the orchid show couldn’t hold her eyes open a second longer!  Some people don’t remember their dreams;  others awaken with tales of amazing adventures or ideas!   To slip from wakefulness to slumber guarantees a delicious sleep,  especially if it’s a cat nap!

These images represent my interpretation of DREAMING for this week’s WordPress Photo Challenge.

Thanks for stopping by!    Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Weekly Image of Life Adventure

Adventure.  Anyone who knows me well would smirk then look in my direction when that word (adventure) was spoken outloud!  Most would wonder what adventurous story I would share next!

They know about the jaguar that escorted me home one full-moon night!

Some know my story of being skunked! (We startled each other; I screamed, and he reacted!)

Ten dollars = lot of potential for creative cooking!

Having two days’ vacation from the Museo Portoviejo Exhibition, I have enjoyed exploring the possibilities for this week’s photo challenges.   Where’s My Backpack  presented one that triggered a grand creative impulse:  Food!  In Latin America,  just-picked fruits and vegetables all but quarrel with one another to star in the special of the day!  Here’s an eclectic assortment of “What’s Cooking” in Z’s kitchen for this week’s challenge of “FOOD.” Continue reading →

Guayaquil (Ecuador) Botanical Gardens/Malecon

Ah! To bask in silence!     A serene setting wraps its loving arms around us and cocoons us in delicious silence!  Libraries offer comforting slices of silence, as do museums; parks and botanical gardens provide visual balms for the soul and reconnect us with nature.  Silence allows our minds to grow quiet, and our senses awaken.

For Jake’s Sunday Post Challenge of “Silence,”  here is an essay that I wrote when I lived “immersed in nature” in Costa Rica. Continue reading →

The sound of howler monkeys crashing through the treetops will get anyone’s attention!  To see them soaring from branch to branch fills one with a childlike glee!  Living immersed in nature, I witness sudden explosive glimpses of movement as well as subtle ones.   Here are samples of movement that reflect my life in Latin America.   Enjoy the pictorial journey!  Z Continue reading →
