GUAYAQUIL, Ecuador
Hey all!
My dear son Chris always writes when he reads about a temblor in Latin America. He once asked, “Mother, this might seem like a crazy question, but where are you?” (That temblor was in Chile!)
I was not surprised to find his email waiting when I logged on to find out more about the temblor that rattled Costa Rica this morning. While having lunch with the staff from ESCoffee, I heard the television announcer say, “…Costa Rica… Nicaragua.. Panama…” and I immediately turned to see why those countries were suddenly in the noticias. “Oh my,” I said, “I have many friends in that area…”

There will surely be more information soon, but as my loved ones and I have always said, “No news is good news.”
To my friends in Costa Rica, I hope that your houses are intact, your water lines unbroken, and that everyone is fine. Suffice to say that I’m sending you my love and energy, though I suspect there’s no electricity for you to touch base with the world!
Sorry, this is hurried. Will be back online tonight!

This is always so scary to read. Especially when you’ve been through an earthquake and know how it feels and how frightening it can be. Hope all of your friends are ok. Saying prayers!
Thanks so much for writing! So far the reports are good, though they were using battery power and wrote fast. Two wrote to say that my place seemed ok. z
Thank goodness! Debbie Hammond Bailey also asked if you were ok on Facebook! Thanks for letting us know!!

Thanks! I’ve experienced some strong ones in CR, where the trees and power posts swayed like a living Salvador Dali painting. I cannot imagine what that 7.6 was like. A few reports have returned though they were hurried. So far, so good. Thanks again, and tell Debbie hi! Z
I have a friend living in Panama, near Boquete in Chiriqi Province, who felt it. Boquete is north of David and not too far from the border with Costa Rica. He said it wasn’t particularly strong there – a sense of movement, but no clinking glassware.
I’ve not heard any reports of fatalities or significant damage. I certainly hope that’s true. My best to your friends there in CR!
Boquete is a lovely area; I’m glad the temblor didn’t stretch its fingers too far. I worry about those volcanoes, especially Arenal in CR and Concepcion on Isla Ometepe, Nicaragua.
The epicenter was not far from the Playa San MIguel area, but sounds like it was really close to Nicoya. Morning should bring more reports and of course images.
Looks like Isaac is coming back for one more look at the Gulf Coast. I hope he’ll be kind and bring you some rain but no winds.
Thanks, amiga.

Sending good wishes and hope that all’s well.
Thanks, Gemma! That’s really sweet of you, and I hope that all’s well, too. So far, so good. Z
Lisa, as soon as you know something about Marie, Hank, Cis and everybody in San Miguel, I am sure you will sens a post on your blog. I hope we will receive good news very soon. If Amber or Layla or Maddie know somethin,g, it would be great if they could inform us on your blog.
Warmest though to everybody
hey
marie is in pennsylvania; here is what hank sent:
Quickly, before my battery fades, No reports of local injuries. All our buildings took some damage. Your rancho showed no major or minor damage. The epicenter was near Samara, so, it was intense. Thanks for your concern. More when the power comes back
…
i will write cis and be sure to let her know that you asked about her.
thanks, z
My thoughts and prayers to your friends and the people of Costa Rica. Earthquakes and calamities creates devastation and suffering that is boyond our imagination. An earthquake recently hit the Philippines and it is a scary, sad event. Great post by friend.
Thanks; wonder what the sea turtles thought/felt. it will be interesting to see if there are any interesting wildlife stories. years ago i noted that the howler monkeys passed through the treetops over my studio, then a few hours later they passed back through in the other direction. that was not normal.
an earthquake hit not long after that!

Oh, I know how scary even the slightest tremors are. I felt aftershocks from the Indonesian one a few months ago and was terrified. Hope all is well with you and your friends Lisa
thank you amiga. temblors are scary yet fascinating. i fear that this one horrified most everyone.

That sounds truly scary! Thank God the epicentre was deep below the surface and damage was limited. Are the tsunami warnings off? Hope you won’t need to evacuate. Take care Lisa.
here’s a report from marie, who is in the states with her mother:
Hank was driving to get some materials for our new house when the earthquake hit. He said that at first he thought that the car was breaking down but then he looked at the ground around him and the earth was rolling. One of the bars in Pueblo Nuevo had a wall fall down but when I talked to Hank last night that seemed to be the worst of what he knew so far. I am sure that the days will reveal more but he said that our house sustained some cracks, the guest house looked good, the new guest house that he was just finishing had a few cracks but all the clay tile roofs on the front overhangs where shaken off and broken.
He has no water as pipes broke and there is no electricity and he expects there will be none for a while. At least he has water to flush the toilets from the pool. I am heading home on Tuesday and will know more 1st hand but for now, he is safe and the houses are still standing. The epicenter was only 17 miles from us.
Hank went to the beach and said the the scorpion sustained some damage but Lisa’s looked good. Bruno pass had more landslide but he was able to get through.
