Butterflies, costa rica, Ecuador, Green Iguanas, Hermit Crabs, Insects, Let's Be Wild Photo Challenge Macro
I’m honored that the image of a flaming sunset at Playa San Miguel was selected as one of the top five for last week’s Let’s Be Wild competition. This week’s competition is for closeups. Although my tough little Lumix camera doesn’t have macro accessories, it has a big heart and usually lassos the subject without much fuss.
Here are a few of my favorites.

Most likely I will be offline for the next few days. Have a great weekend!

Awesome photos z!
Thank you so much! I have great opportunities to photograph nature year round! Z
Me too. Isn’t it great!
yes, we are lucky! z
Outstanding depth of field, not as easy as your great shots make it look. Nice work.
Hey! Thanks! Your comment gave me a flashback to when I was young and my mother and two sisters would rope me into playing a hand of bridge. When the ‘hand’ was finished, and I prepared to dash back outside, I would hear one of them say, ” Can you believe she sloughed that card off… ” or some kind of praise that I was unaware I had done!
I’ll go back and look at the images through your eyes! Thanks! Z
🙂
Espectacular Lisa! …el mérito no es de la cámara.
Gonzalo! Thank you so much! I appreciate your praise! Give your lovely family my love, especially our young artista!
You do such amazing work. I find my jaw dropping each time I look at your photos. 🙂
Thank you! Your comments are always a sweet tonic! I’m glad you enjoyed the post!
Macro schmacro! Good job, Lisa!
You are a delight! Thanks, Gemma! Z
Fabulous!
I might just do one more post before I go offline as well. A great weekend to you too Lisa 🙂
My plans fizzled out, and I am home sweet home. The river is extra quiet tonight, and I am about to go sit on the deck and enjoy the calmmmmmmmm. Thanks, amiga! z
My god this are amazing!
I was wondering if I can use some of you images for my next post 😉 will mention you and the blog 😉
I answered on your blog, but of course, and yes, you did an AMAZING job on the post! Thank you so much for the beautiful feature! I am honored! Z
Don’t worry you can answer where ever you want. Thanks Lisa again!
I love the macro setting on my camera! Great pics!!!!!!!! 🙂
I should probably double check and be sure there’s not a setting on mine! z
These are all fantastic! I’ve only had luck with capturing flowers close up. It is tricky but the effects are amazing. Great photos! 🙂
Thanks! If one takes enough images, one gets lucky – at least with insects and butterflies! I’m sure a macro lens would be all but addictive for the first few months! Hmmm. dear Santa…. Z
🙂 I bet it would be worth the investment! 🙂
you are so right! thanks! z
Amazing! ~Lynda
Gracias! Life off the beaten path has its benefits! I’m glad you enjoyed the photos! z
Just amazing, Z! Did you have to wait long time to get these shots? Thank you so much for sharing!
Thanks, Amy! I looked down and saw the iguana caught in the fence, then retrieved clippers and camera and began to release him, snip by snip! I spotted the snake in the hibiscus bushes, and took at least 20 images of the snake, often less than a foot away.. I knew it wasn’t poisonous so stayed with it as it slithered through the underbrush. I keep lots of flowers in the yard, so I am forever ‘flower hopping’ after insects or iguanas! I always play sit and wait with the hermit crabs and am usually rewarded with some great shots!
Thank you so much for your comment! Z
Your pictures are amazing and some scary.. I would never get close enough to capture some of the ones you got.. like the snake.. way too close for my comfort but you captured him in an amazing shot! 🙂 Carol
thanks, carol! i’m surprised that snakes would spook you! i knew it was a harmless snake, so i had no trouble ‘shadowing’ it as it went through the hibiscus! the entire series of those images of the snake is amazing!
hey i might be from Louisiana but I am a girly girl…not the outdoorsy type..LOL
Amazing photos, Z! I’m so jealous. My little Olympus is just not good at macros….
i understand totally. i sometimes aim the camera at a more solid object (like my hand or a tree or the ground) about the same distance as the insect/snake/scorpion and when it focuses, i hold the shutter half way then turn to the subject and take the photo. otherwise the camera tries to second guess what’s the subject and focuses most anywhere except the insect/snake/scorpion….
Aww, very interesting. I will have to try that little trick. Hopefully I can fool my little camera on focusing on the right thing! 🙂
Great shooting with extremely fine detail and vibrants colors. Nicely done!
thank you so much! i am often in pursuit of those details for reference later with my paintings. z
Well, your “pursuit” looks just fine.
Remarkable photos! How do you decide which one to submit for a prize?? (You must live a very full life!)
we are lucky that ‘let’s be wild’ allows us total freedom to respond to the prompt in whatever form we’d like, as long as it depicts the outdoors. they are the ones who face the difficult task of selecting the pick of the litter!
thoreau would be proud that i try to squeeze the marrow from each day. i just returned from outside, where i heard a subtle change of sound. the river was filled with swimming comorants, and the sun made the water glow like liquid silver! it’s hard to capture that with photos, but if they turned out well, i promise to share a few!
i still have to stop long enough to manage the photos from thanksgiving afternoon. there should be some winners there!
a painting awaits my attention for the rest of the morning!

You’re doing a really good job at macro! whow that scorpion and the snake!! be careful though! 😉
Thanks, amiga! Yes, I have developed a ‘sensitivity’ to scorpion stings, but I knew that the snake was harmless. I enjoyed the latter and was creeped out when i saw the former!
thanks! z
Lovely photos Z!
thanks, amiga!
These are awesome… The scorpion gave me the jitters! 🙂
Brilliant and vivid pictures!!
Absolutely wonderful !!
your macros are always wonderful as well!
z
Amazing photographs! Congratulations, I can see why the little guy was selected – it’s an awesome shot.
thanks, mary! i love zooming in on details for my reference files for painting. i am very sensitive to copyright issues, so my stockpile of images grows larger and larger! z
These surely do look like you’re using a macro lens. I need to really work with my camera more – it has a macro setting, but I’ve not learned how to use it to best effect. I think it has a way to fine-tune the setting, too. Do you think I should read the instruction book? 😉
Wonderful photos, that have inspired me to put out just a little more effort!
ja! instruction book?!! i actually pulled out my instruction book a few times long ago, but that is such a right-brained attitude: to ‘go with the flow’ and all things work out!
a reflexologist has been in the area, and he laughs at me a lot.. he has taken my blood oxygen and heart rate several times and rolls his eyes and says i will live forever. my normal pulse/heart rate is in the 60s.. last check as 61 at the end of the day at the local watering hole! he says that i stay in meditative mode!
i suspect you will figure out your macro options without consulting the book. you tap into a zen sort of mode when you work as well. right? 🙂 z
Amazing and wonderful! You have great opportunities over there – and an eye for it!
Thanks, amiga! You have quite the artistic eye as well! All of your posts are beautiful! z
Amazing work!
Wonderful photos! How did you manage to keep these critters still for your lens? 🙂 I swear that the lizard was even smiling at you.
Wonderful images.
A terrific series!
Hi Z your photo patience certainly paid off once again! This iguana and all the details in the colors are something one could study for hours! These photos are exquisite! Thank you for sharing! What an eye for composition!
I am glad you enjoyed the images. The ‘trapped’ iguana was a funny moment! He ate so much that he couldn’t squeeze back through the fence. The odd part was that it trusted me, and by the time I had clipped him loose, he stayed in my hand for at least five minutes!
Hope your evening is going well.
Z
WOW!
ja! thanks!
