Fun Times In Jama!

Fun Times In Jama Ecuador! 2011/12

(This post was written in 2012, and the additions written in blue are from December 31, 2016:   The small mustard-colored house in the photo above is the only building that remains after the April 16th earthquake.  The ‘people’ in the photos are my friends!)

Some people get all dressed up to welcome the new year!

Too Pretty To Be A Guy!  (The man in the red shirt in the background was in his home on the corner when the earthquake hit around 7 pm that night.  Holding a young child in his arms, he fell through the second floor and broke his leg – a very bad break.  The child, thanks to him, was fine.)

My all-time favorite holiday in Ecuador is not New Year’s Eve itself, but the preparation for New Year’s Eve, when people make or buy the papier mache ‘Los Anos Viejos’ and display them proudly outside their home or business. Richard, one of the staff members of the Portoviejo Museum,  starts making Ano Viejos in August and sells them at the end of each year. A few weeks ago I visited Richard’s home and received a sneak peek of his army of creations!

(I do not know if the Portoviejo Museum received extensive damage or not;  the Bahia de Caraquez Museum will be demolished, and a new one will be built on another site.)

Let’s go see his workshop!   Continue reading →

Mary’s Rainbow Zebra – Painted With Love – Acrylic Painting by Mary McDonald

My niece Karen sent images from snow-covered Little Rock, Arkansas last night and this morning.  (Thanks again, KK!)   Brrrrrrrrrr, the snow is lovely but I am happy to be where the sun is shining with coastal breezes and perpetual springtime temperatures!    I would love to feature photos from all of you that reflect your present weather. If you have any you’d like to share, send them to me at tzeebra (at) yahoo. com and I will be happy to design a post with round the world images of December’s weather!  (Remember to note the country or state or province!)

Two paintings have demanded my attention this week, and between holiday society and WordPress society (Thank you everyone!) and email greetings, I have not had time to even LOOK at the Christmas images on my camera! Continue reading →

Feeling Festive!

Ecuadorians often begin their evenings when I am ready for slumber!  (My sleep patterns are more like the birds’ than the Ecuadorians!)     Last year I spent Christmas Eve with friends, and I was amused to find that their day was like all others!  When the sun set, and no one had started cooking, I asked if I could help prepare some food.  “No,” they smiled, we’re going to a cousin’s house to eat..”

Around 11 in the evening, we drove to the other side of town to the cousin’s house.  People were serving their plates, so we were quickly seated at the dining room table and feasted on turkey and trimmings and white wine!  At the stroke of midnight, everyone stopped eating and exchanged greetings,  and then we resumed our meal!   We visited for another few hours, then returned home!

P1510677 cameronera egrets y herons xmas

I questioned a friend today about their tradition, and she said that they also eat at midnight, and they exchange greetings in observance of the birth of the Christ Child.   Gift giving is for the children, while the “Papa Noel” tradition follows in  February in honor of the three wise men who brought presents to the Christ Child.

And that, my friends,  is my Christmas report!  We’re getting a bit of rain, which means I’ll be ‘ht and miss’  on WordPress for the next few months, at the whim of the temperamental electricity!

See more Christmas posts at Jake’s Sunday Post and festive posts at WHERE’S MY BACKPACK.

Feliz Navidad!

The Gift of Curiosity

JAMA ECUADOR – December 2012

When I first sank my roots into this farming community, I was one of few transplants. The locals warmly accepted their pale-skinned ‘Gringa Alta,’ and the children learned to quickly spot the strange-talking outsider when she came to town.  Parents sat in the shadows and nudged the ninos to greet the Gringita.  Those children (and their families) have enriched my life.

Many have a basic and simple life that bestows them with rich virtues, although they aren’t often exposed to advanced technologies.   When I compare their simple lives with those in the more-cultured world, I question if one can give a child too much.   Material possessions are oftentimes a curse;  we stay so focused on the newest gadget that we lose sight of the simple and free gifts at our fingertips.

The Gift Of Trust

ThisMansJourney’s sensitive post about children and their gifts will warm any Scrooge’s heart! Most of the children of rural Ecuador will not be hoping for the latest high-tech gadget this Christmas; families focus on simple gatherings and modest gifts. These children are blessed with the gift of a simple life. Take a walk with me through the area and witness the gifts that enrich their simple lives.

My Chatty Neighbor Mister Kingfisher!

Each year nature lovers participate in Audubon’s  annual Christmas Bird Count.  Ecuador again trumped all others last year with a whopping count of  492 species in the Yanayacu area.   Mindo Ecuador reported 432 birds, and Costa Rica took third, fourth and fifth places with 382, 378 and 340 counts.  See the top tallies for North, South and Central America HERE.

Birds Birds Birds!

Birds Birds Birds!

I respect all who devote an entire day to counting as many species as possible:  I also encourage everyone to keep a pad handy and note the birds one sees from now until January 5th.

Ah, the mangroves provide visual comfort!

So what’s stopping you?  Peer out that window and start scribbling and see how many species live in your neighborhood!  Challenge your neighbors, your loved ones, especially the youth and direct them to noting the beauty of nature!

Here are some images of my neighbors the birds.

I try to keep bananas on hand to use in place of sugar when blending a natural drink.   My present favorite drink contains papaya, red hibiscus blossoms, fresh mint, maracuya (passion fruit) and the optional banana.  Since red and green make brown, the mint makes the concoction a bit ugly – but hey! – dim the lights and enjoy the flavor while your body drinks in nutrients! I often forget to strain the drinks before serving my friends, and they stare at me with this, “You really don’t expect me to drink this….. do you?” kind of look!

From Pingbacks to Pinterest to Copyright Issues

Speaking Up For Copyrights!

Speaking Up For Copyrights!

My post about the pingbacks received interesting feedback and presented new subjects to ponder about responsible blogging.   We appreciate when someone mentions one of our posts and guides the reader to us via pingback.   Everyone agrees that those are great pingbacks!  The image below shows five pending notifications of pingbacks.  The question for me is, “Are these from people who have visited my site, or will I find another person in pursuit of more hits?”

Which is real and which is borderline spam?

Which is real and which is borderline spam?

Those of us who enter the photo challenges sometimes receive a different kind of pingback,   With a right click,  a small number of bloggers copy from the challenge site and paste to theirs; this past week one of these bloggers presented one photo, no text, linked to the WordPress challenge then listed 125 sites and received 66 likes!!!!!  He also received several thanks for the pingbacks, so go figure, not everyone is bothered by these posts.

Those border on spam and join another type of borderline of spam.   Some people visit sites and leave a string of suspicious ‘likes.’  How can one hit the  ‘like, like, like, like, like’ button in a few seconds and say that they read the posts?!

This is a REAL pending pingback! See what a lovely comm

A lovely REAL comment (right) awaited my approval!!!

Linda of Shoreacres contributed sound feedback and addressed her concern about copyright infringement from re blogging    I’ve had my own brushes with copyright infringement, so I had no problem agreeing with her concerns.

Sneaky Snake

Who Wants To Challenge A Sneaky Snake? –

Years ago I was shocked to find one of my photos featured in an international magazine.   Challenging a copyright dispute is an arduous task, and several attorneys I consulted seemed to pull away as if it was taboo to challenge a well-known periodical.  I regret not pursuing that infringement violation. (Living off the grid does have its disadvantages!)

I have frowned on Facebook because one signs over licensing rights for the photos.  People have uploaded my photos without asking, and I wonder how they clear that ethical question about having permission to use the images before uploading.   Angela West of PCWorld states in a February 2012 article,  “Facebook asks each time you upload a photo if you have the permission to use it. The legal burden lies with the original person who posted the photo rather than those who share links to it.

Pinterest does not ask users to consider permissions before each “pin,” aiming to make the user experience seamless. While having your content shared arguably helps popularize it, many artists and photographers may want to be asked or paid first.”

I suspect that people do this with images found on Google searches and rarely remember to give credit (or ask permission!) before using the images.  I’ve watched someone pull up images for iguanas, find my paintings then quickly right-click without any qualms!  Others have said, “I saw the photos on facebook!”  (Facebook?) and they told how a friend right clicked from my post and uploaded to share with others.  This disturbs me a lot, though most do this with a novice’s innocence.

It all started when Luchy asked for suggestions for improvements to his cyber cafe.

It all started when Luchy asked for suggestions for improvements to his cyber cafe.

IT STARTED WITH ONE LIGHT POLE

The above post, It Started With One Light Pole, received a lot of attention and praise, and I am now slightly amused at the the irony of the title.  My most recent frustration goes back to this post, and yes, it started with one light pole!

0 day last cevallos youngest

While researching licensing and copyright infringement stories about Facebook and Pinterest, I wondered if anyone had right-clicked any of my images and posted them without my permission.  I went to the Pinterest site and typed in my name, and viola! there were some of my photos!  Most linked back to a feature article from Virtual News. that referred back to the light pole story.   Paul’s article was a nice one, though he right clicked and wrote the article without asking permission to use the images.  He DID write me and shared the link when he published it.

Someone else right clicked and wrote another article, this time with little reference back to my blog.  They did give me photo credits, but never bothered to tell me they’d used them in the post.  I found it by finding the image on google images, which took me back to that post.

Finding the images on Pinterest worried me, especially since one of the photos doesn’t have my copyright notice. (My mistake)  So next I searched “Zeebra Designs” and found a photograph of a howler monkey.  Again, full credit and a link back to the post was included, but I wonder who might right click it next into a periodical or greeting card or…?

Next I found one of my Playa San Miguel images from a search in that name, and it had two ‘repins.’  As with one of the street art, this image did not bear my copyright notice.  (My mistake again!)

I have also found images of mine that friends uploaded to Google Earth to pinpoint a location.  They surely claimed that they owned the image during the upload prompts!  (They probably thought they were doing me a favor!)  Discovering all of this sort of makes me want to butt heads with a few people!!!

Head Buttin' Time

Head Buttin’ Time

Before you right click an image, please consider the person who most likely devoted many years to hone and develop that talent.  It’s unfair to insert it into your site without giving credit and a link back to the photographer, who might or might not stumble upon it one day.    If someone else right clicks it and shares, eventually someone will assume it’s in the public domain.  That might be a grand honor for someone whose profession is outside of the arts, but it’s a huge disappointment to the artist who has worked hard to gain respect and earn an honest living!

If the issue of copyrights interests you, here are a few details:

Yippee! Somebody Loves Me!

Yippee! Somebody Loves Me!

Although I consider myself still in the elementary school level of WordPress, I am proud to be more seasoned as I begin year two.   Every so often someone mentions one of my posts, and a pingback arrives in the moderator’s box.   Of course I follow the ‘ping’ back to the source, and I read – with honor – what someone has said about my post.  Of course I thank him or her!

Which is real and which is a snake?

A snake in stealth mode…

The “Please moderate” notice states that someone commented on the post,  although recently I’ve trailed lots of pingbacks only to find that my post is one of many in a long string.   Most likely these people don’t even visit my post but copy and paste my entry along with the others and rack up visits to their own posts.  I don’t appreciate being manipulated to follow a pingback, only to find a duplicate list copied from the challenge home page.  If a comment were left behind, I would probably visit the pingback page and linger for a while on more than one post.

"Are you SURE you want to do this?" NO! I am not sure!

“Are you SURE you want to do this?”   No! I’ think I want it to go in the spam folder!

Those pingbacks reek of spam; does anyone else share this irritation, or am I being too sensitive?  Many times their posts are well written and interesting, but the queue of sites that have been copied and pasted alter my respect for the post.    Is there a code of ethics for pingbacks on the weekly challenges?

I treasure your comments and pingbacks and love exploring new posts by people who leave a trail.   I don’t, however, appreciate generic pingbacks with no reciprocation.

They don't bite, but

They don’t bite, but I wish they’d stay out of my tree!

I welcome your feedback!

Token Image of Mourning

News of today’s Sandy Hook School massacre stunned the world;   though I am removed from 90 percent of television broadcasts, I am sure that everyone is searching for answers that make sense of this tragedy.   Through condolence posts, many people have found a token way to release some of their pain through the written word.   Dennis Koenig created a public-domain photo-image flag and asked that we pass it round the world as a token image of mourning.

mourn-sunrise flag of mourning

Here is his explanation of the image:

“We need a flag dedicated to mourning and memorializing murdered children.

Any children. Anywhere. Any time. By anyone. For any reason…

…In the flag image I created today for my use on such horrible occasions, derived from a photograph I made several years ago:

Yellow is for the ache of unquenchable longing
Red is for pain, suffering, bloodshed
Black is for death, mourning, sorrow
White rising sun is for compassion, hope, and help  “

See his post here:  Flag For Murdered Children

Thank you, Dennis.

Hibiscus isn’t JUST for tea!

WordPress Weekly Challenge asks for examples of Delicate.  Before reading the text, I thought of the delicate texture of hibiscus blossoms that often find their way into my food and drink!

While waiting for the post to load (connection speeds are often brutally slow here!) I pondered a more serious post that addressed the delicate balance between man and nature.   The story is here:  A FRAGILE BALANCE – The Decline of the Olive Ridley Sea Turtle.

The turtle returned to the quiet beach, nested, returned to the sea, yet humans raided the nest!

The delicate balance between man and nature often causes dysfunction between  the rights of nature versus modern progress.  Here are a few examples that balance moments I’ve sadly witnessed against others that give hope. Continue reading →

I pondered the words that start with X for Frizztext’s Story Challenge, and suddenly had this great Eureka Moment! X for my friend Xavier!  Xavier is a first cousin to Fernando, who manned the canoe in last week’s image for the Let’s Be Wild Challenge.  (That image placed in the honorable mention bracket!)

When Xavier’s mother lived in Miami, I often prompted Xavier and his brother Cesar to “Smile for your mother!” and then emailed the images to Maruja!  Peer over my shoulder and experience typical Ecuadorian farm life, which is also my life  whenever I ask, “Xavier, may I please tag along with you today?” Continue reading →

Ahhhhhh! Creeping out of bed before the first light of day always rewards me with magical moments! There’s a pristine wakefulness of the senses, and the first words of the day are unspoken ones with nature. By being silent, one aligns with the rhythms of nature.

Two challenges have chosen the subject of peaceful this week, so between power outages, internet failures and travel, I have enjoyed thumbing through the files for some of my favorite images for this theme. Continue reading →

Juan, Pancho, Gatito and Amaro

After sharing the reasons I love my life here in Ecuador, I wanted to share some examples of the frustrations I often encounter.  Eighteen days have passed since Gatito dropped by to say that he would be back ‘manana’ to finish the work on the house.  When he didn’t return that next day, I was certain that he would show up the next… or the next.  After five days, I realized that manana means, ‘Not today.’ Continue reading →

Cabalgata in San Vicente Ecuador

Cabalgata in San Vicente Ecuador

Every so often, my sensitive side catches me off guard, and something triggers a release of tears that makes me ponder, “Am I nuts to let this affect me?”  Recently horses seem to be a recurring theme in my life.  An equestrian since early childhood, I ‘brake’ for a well-bred horse with dinner-plate jaw, arched neck and intelligent eyes.

Cowboys & Cowgirls, Giddye-Up On Down That Road!

A few weeks ago, I encountered a detour in nearby San Vicente (Ecuador), where a ‘tope’ event blocked traffic along the outgoing lanes of traffic.   Not frustrated by the detour, I bailed out of the bus and began taking photos! Continue reading →

Frizztext’s Story Challenge brings us to the final letters of the alphabet.  “Watercolor” shoves out other options for this week’s selection from my tag stats!

Water water everywhere… Many times I remind struggling watercolorists to remember that it’s ‘WATER’color.  One wants the white of the paper to enhance the painting and make the colors glow! Continue reading →

“That Zeebra Lady has so much to learn!”

WordPress asks us to rewrite our first post.  I enjoyed this challenge, pulled up my first post about custom floors and interiors, hit ‘edit’ and reworked it by changing the title.

After revising it, I searched for the publish button, and woe is me!  It remained under the original’s format as an update.

Alas, the best way to point you to the revised post is by this method!

https://playamart.wordpress.com/2011/12/06/custom-floors/

Thanks for following the dots to the revised post, and I hope that other bloggers learn from my mistake!

A friend says that he loves my stories, but it's a shame that I'm in an institution in Mississippi and making this all up!
