The Early Bird Gets the Image!
Let’s Be Wild nudges us outside to record the beauty of the sunrise. We are in the rainy season here in Ecuador, and the rain trumps the sunshine for the first hours of each morning! I am reaching back to share a memory of an amazing sunrise at Playa San Miguel, Costa Rica. Later that day, my friend Marie said, “I came by your house early this morning, and you were gone!”
These images illustrate the rewards of leaving home in the pitch-black darkness in hopes of finding unique sunrise moments.

The sounds of awakening dawn often prompt me into getting outside before the first light tints the sky! That particular morning at Playa San Miguel rewarded me with a jackpot of memories! This area is about a twenty-minute walk from my house, and I wanted to get in place to record the dramatic morning light.

Well good morning sunshine!

What a serene way t o start the day!

After the sun crept a bit higher, I started exploring the beach.

The sun was still too low to warm this rocky area.

Looking back to the pre-dawn vantage point, I also inspected the high-tide flotsam.

Well, hello there, guapo!

Hermit crabs have such character!

A lone coconut beckoned, “Come look inside!”

Hermit crabs love to feast on the meat of a discarded coconut!

Many times I hit the jackpot and find a crab-stuffed coconut!

Private all-you-can-eat dining!

The alarm bell sounds, and the hermit crabs evacuate!

The hermits weren’t expecting an alient abduction of their coconut craft! They quickly abandoned ship!

I enjoyed photographing them as they left the scene of their feast!

One can never have too many hermit photos!

But wait… what’s this?

I could have stayed in bed and slept through this moment!

This one will have award-winning stories to tell on full-moon nights!

Thanks, Let’s Be Wild, for this great opportunity to share a very memorable dawn/sunrise moment!

Ah, while many people were having their first cup of coffee , I was having amazing conversations with the awakening dawn!

Beautiful sunrise, and love the hermits!
thanks! it’s sunrise here now, thought we just had an amazing moon set!
Beautiful sunrise; I always loved sunrise and sunset at the beach. Suddenly I am remembering that the last sunrise I saw was on Sept 4th 2010, the sunrise after our first big earthquake. We were so glad to have daylight but also fearful of what the day would reveal. By the way, I didn’t see an h words today. Disappointing.
i am sure that was a surreal time for you. just recently after extremely heavy rains, i slept lightly so that i could be up/out at daylight to see if the river was in bounds. that was surreal enough – i cannot imagine what it would be like to wonder what damage a powerful earthquake had done to my town/city.
I love your photos. The sunrises are stunning.
BE ENCOURAGED! BE BLESSED!
What wonderful photos! Am I correct that the last little hermit crab was using – was is a styrofoam cup? – as his shell? Amazing! Thanks
On a scale of 1 – 10 your photographs this morning are an 11. I love your seascapes – the lighting and angles are what draws me to paint the ocean. So beautiful. I don’t want to leave the crabs out of this, because you captured some really interesting shots of these little guys – gosh their houses are the imaginative places.
thank you! i have about a thousand images of those little hermits – i can’t seem to get enough of them, and they make me smile.
i am glad that you enjoyed the post!

Gorgeous shots, it’s only 20-min walk! Hermit crabs eat coconut 🙂
I have no idea why I despise all crabs except hermit crabs? They are basically the same but I think they are awesome. The world may never know.
you are right – hermit crabs are an exception, and they have such charisma.. they have the power to prompt a smile!
Fantastic. It’s so hard to get up early…and as you’ve shown beautifully, so very rewarding. Great photos!! Now go take a rest!

thanks! as you know, the early bird is oftentimes rewarded! z
What a beautiful area you live in. I had to chuckle at that little hermit crab scuttling away with his bottom in a flower pot. You could say he was rooted… 🙂
Hi Z,
Just back for a moment to ask for your permission about using one, maybe two of the plastic cap hermit pictures for my next post, with just a couple of words, with a credits indication having your avatar, blog name and full link?
Would it be possible?
🙂
of course! thank you for your support and for your professionalism! i look forward to seeing your post.
