Slow internet prompts me to switch tasks, and when I am not painting or drawing, I am usually wading through photos and savoring the memories of life in Latin America. Many of you provided amazing encouragement and praise as Barbara and I stitched memories into that Magic Carpet on the bodega floor! Thank you! Barb is now traveling in Costa Rica with a cluster of good friends who were eager for their own adventures with the Hummingbird!
Here’s a pictorial of several more memories shared while Hummingbird was here:
Four or five blocks from the Fontana Hotel is a unique art museum! Hank, Marie and I stumbled upon it when they visited in November! The second visit was like dropping in on family, and this time Manuel allowed photos!
In Jama, Hostal Ciragan is conveniently located near the center of town.
West of Ciragan is the ‘Casa Blanca’ where the Museum and Library are located on the ground floor.
Between Ciragan and the main town square, a tall ceibo tree hosts a canopy of iguanas. One should always look up and try to count how many are sunning.
One can get an early morning cup of (instant) coffee from the street cafe, conveniently located between the Coactur Bus stop and the cyber cafe!
One block back from the park and bus stop is the municipality building. I attended a presentation this past week regarding a proposed real estate project, Punta Ballena. The project looks very nice with great eye appeal. Running a road directly behind Coco Beach Village seems a bit insensitive to the homeowners there, and I hope – with my limited Spanish – that I misunderstood the explanation. The second road seems like a great plan that would have little impact on the quiet village or on wildlife. I find myself wondering why two roads are necessary if eliminating one would assure peace in the neighborhood! Hopefully more information will shed a bit more light on the plan, as for now, i assume that’s what it is – the first step.
Down the street from Casa Blanca is Marcelo’s office for internet. As sluggish as my service is during the hours when most people are awake, I am still grateful that I can get internet at home on the river! To my delight, a young friend was quietly waiting on his father, and he extended a warm greeting!
Plans are underway for a new post-painting concurso/competition, tentatively set for June. This will surely be another win-win painting session, and the town will smile with new explosions of color!
With time running out on Barb’s visit, we took a ten-minute bus ride up the coastal highway and bailed out at the gates to Punta Prieta, a quiet hostal and restaurant with a jaw-dropping view. Lovingly designed by Alonzo, it continues to evolve and is a feast for the senses!
After a tour of the gardens, cabanas, and lighthouse, we enjoyed a sunset dinner.
Always the gentleman, Alonzo drove us to Hostal Ciragan in Jama, as we had an early-morning bus to catch!
The pre-dawn awakenings entertained us as Barb awaited her first cup of coffee!
Earlier in the week we traveled to Bahia to purchase material for the Hummingbird painting. We stopped by the museum to say hello to my friends, and Carlos, the guide said, ‘Lisa! There’s a new exhibit, and your painting is included!’ Barb and I wasted no time in going two floors higher to ‘piso uno.’ (How can the third floor be the first floor?!!!)
After a final afternoon and evening in Guayaquil, Barb soared out of Ecuador airspace and touched down in Costa Rica for the next chapter in her travels!
Although she’s now in the northern hemisphere, her spirit will linger in the southern – on the last bend of the river!

Great narrative and pictures of your fun with Barb..really enjoyed seeing more of Jama.

thank you! jama has such a cowboy feel to it, and then there are those modern municipality buildings that seem so out of place.

Hola Lisa: I enjoy so much your designs that capture the essential spirit of the tropics, color, form, composition that spring from our indigenous roots and you interpret so well.
Just wanted to comment on your interpretation of what I said about the roads leading to our project Punta Ballena. A year ago when we presented the City Council with our original project we asked the Municipio to forego the planned road through the back of of Coco Beach since it is not necessary and it will seriously damage the environment and the privacy and tranquility that the new residents are looking for. They did not bulge and the only thing we obtained after a year of bargaining is to change a car road
to a pedestrian walkway to the beach. We still are against that road and will not use it to enter our project, we will use the back road. Please clear this up for the people in CBV . We had to delay for a year our project and redesign it so as to lessen the negative effect of this road we call “La Via del Capricho”. Would love to present the project to you and whoever would like to listen.

hey belo!
this makes me SO HAPPY! I wanted to talk to all of you about this, but after the meeting, it did not seem like the right time or place. your project looks beautiful, and it should blend well into the area. yes, i have lots of questions — most out of my love to learn about new things, and that lovely lagoon – would that be ocean/brackish/sweet water? i suspect ocean, which would be so interesting.
i will be out of pocket until wed but would love to meet with all of you and, as i told filipe before the meeting, write a special post about your project.
thank you so much for your comment!

What an incredible week.Wish I could just bop in these hostels and museums…so much to see and am glad Hummingbird Barbara isn’t slowing down to grow any moss..she’s off on another adventure. Wow! The painting at the river house is incredible, even with the uninvited guests. I must have missed the finished version. After the huge floor project, I can’t image what you’ll be creating next.

hey
i’ve been rolling paint on a new section of the bodega walls.. poco a poco, progress is made!

Playamart - Zeebra Designs said:
hey! the ‘if fish could fly’ painting was progressing, and i wanted to finish it before making another post… when barb arrived, it seemed most logical to throw all our energies into the floor, and i could go back to those meticulous details later. working the bands of color ‘behind some of the objects is a lot of work! i plan to devote tomorrow to that task and hope to be finished by the end of the day!
i really enjoyed your post today about bellavista in mindo!

Your life is so very full of the flavors, colors, and textures of … well, “life”! It is all around you isn’t it? Good for you. An excellent post and wonderful photographs, thank you for sharing. 🙂
Playamart - Zeebra Designs said:
thank you! i’m truly not sure how that happened; it seems so normal, so natural for me… but then i realize that many don’t immerse themselves in color, in flavors – in life!
thanks, penny, for your feedback! z

My pleasure! I did mention (at some point in the recent past) that I am envious, in a happy for you kind of way! 🙂

You always amaze me, Lisa! Such beauty all around you and you capture it perfectly in words and photographs!
PS: I am secretly wishing to have your kitty on a swing in your picture up at the top of this post! He is so adorable!
Playamart - Zeebra Designs said:
digame! talk to me, amiga! the painted kitty?!!! that gave me a big smile! i hope to finish that painting by the end of tomorrow – there are many details to ‘clean up’ and make precise. i’ll let you know when it’s finished, and we’ll see if we can make that wish come true!
:)) what good is life if we can’t spread the sunshine?
Lynda said:
Glad to make you smile! 🙂
Playamart - Zeebra Designs said:
he’s probably ready to jump out of that swing by now and start chasing those flying fish!
Lynda said:
Ha! That was my impression too. 😉
Playamart - Zeebra Designs said:
ha again! we could spin a whole line of children’s stories based on the cat in the swing and the flying fish! hmmmmm.
with springtime here, i’ll bet you’re itching to get started gardening in your new location….
Lynda said:
I am! But I have to wait. 😛 I love your idea about the children’s books! I write children’s stories all the time, but haven’t an artistic bone in my body.
Hmmmm…

What a lovely post! It makes me a little sad to have Barb gone; I was enjoying hearing her voice sharing space with yours to tell of your adventures and progress. I aspire to have your zest for life…what a grand example you are! Thank you!
Playamart - Zeebra Designs said:
oh cindy! i suspect that you already do have that zest for life! barb opened a wordpress account last year but hasn’t pursued it yet. i’m hoping that she’ll start dabbling in it..it would be fun for us to plan some posts at the same time.. her story /my story sort of posts! (how about it, barb?!)
i’ll be sure that she sees your comment!

Z..either you’re a master multitasker, or you never sleep. You simply amaze me with your energy and zest for a colorful life.
Playamart - Zeebra Designs said:
hey!
i really d’t multitask very well at all, but when i dig into a project, i stick with it, which sometimes means that i don’t sleep until finished! with the posts, the best time to work on them is after midnight when the connections are faster. i do that if i am able to sleep later in the day or go to bed really early that evening. yesterday i took several cat naps to recover from the all nighter!
presently the connection is so slow that i want to hurl the computer out the window! am about to switch to painting for the day. this task has been the carrot all weekend, and i have earned this decadent day of painting!
thanks, as always, for your comments and easy friendship!

Hotel Ciragan looks really nice and I would love to see that tree of iguanas! That dish of shrimp and fried plantains (??) looks delicious. I’m glad you had a great visit with your friend. And love that final sunset view!
Playamart - Zeebra Designs said:
i tink the perennial deal for culinary options is always shrimp here in jama, the town of the shrimp ponds! when a pond is harvested, the walk-on help is paid in shrimp, and the head to jama and sell it.. it’s win win for everyone, especially those of us who show up at a restaurant, and reap the benefits!
thanks so much!
