WordPress’s Weekly Photo Challenge asks us to share one image about a particular culture. Aaron states, “So that is your assignment here: inspire curiosity with your photography.”
Short and sweet, here is an image that might inspire curiosity about the annual culture of Ano Viejo in Ecuador.
If you’re curious, follow this link to a post about the end of the year effigy burnings in Ecuador.

This certainly has made me curious! Are the figures actual people – I assume not? They are just random figures?

hey! they are amazing museum artifacts from the indigenous cultures of ecuador. most come from the ”jama coaque’ culture from the area where i now live. i never tire of admiring the genius of their art!

love the new years festival and all the creative effigies. So much time and work for a 5 second burn-up in the bonfires. 🙂

Highly intriguing. The figures all together form an installation on their own. – And they burn them?? I enjoy your blog, keep it up. Incidentaly at your suggestion I documented one of my pictures in some detail, please feel to stop by. Cheers! Tony

yes, they burn them, and a friend told me that many people write down their problems/stories and place them inside the efigy, and then those problems are burned away!
your post is great, and i love getting the medical explanation for the xrays then seeing how you convert them to art!

did you know that mostly of the people write a note spelling all the bad things about the ended year, they put it into the effigy to burn it!!!!! Sometime people make effigy with face similar to somebody they know…..They think the person they are burning will have better luck next year!!!!!! Just sharing curiosities!!!

the more you share, the better the post is for everyone! no, i did not know that people put a note in the effigies! that makes sense and is great inexpensive mental health care!
thank you, amiga!

Very interesting, Lisa. I would love to live in a culture in South America someday. Effigy burnings… how fascinating!

es, the effigies represent the old year – all of the bad as well as the good.. you burn it away at the stroke of midnight and step into the new year without that baggage!

Oh, I like that idea very much!! 🙂

Oh, I remember your post, and the marvelous ritual! How can it be that four months have passed? Let’s see… I surely had a New Year’s resolution or six. Maybe that’s what got burned up!

ha ha ha! yes, time does have a way of slipping past, sometimes way too fast! i’ve been painting shadows and highlights on the ’tile’ floor today and tonight, so that task has been a slow one!
i’m going to do one more session of painting and call it a night.
thanks, as always, for your comments!
