MARCHA BLANCA POR LA PAZ DE JAMA –
A White March for Peace, planned for 11 a.m. tomorrow, will unite the locals of Jama in standing up and speaking out against crime. Their non-political march will send the message, “Not in our backyard!”
Concerned about several recent robberies in the area, the locals will show their solidarity by wearing white and carrying a token white flag. The march will begin in front of the iglesia by the park at 11 o’clock tomorrow/Sunday.
Last August I witnessed a similar march in Bahia de Caraquez. Seeing the blanket of people dressed in white moved me to tears. The people of Jama hope to have an equally-heartwarming march. Read about Bahia’s march HERE.
May the concept of White for Peace continue to sweep crime back in its place. If crime is escalating in your area, why not organize a Marcha Blanca Por La Paz as well?
(A special thanks to Lesli Flaman for keeping us informed about local events!)

I do hope this will work out as good as the one before – and it is always a good idea to stand together.
Jama has been the town of Manabi less crime index We don´t want the index increases…. We will be present!!! “Peace for Jama”
thank you for that informtion! yes, it’s always been known for the lack of crime, so i’m glad everyone is standing up against crime! see you tomorrow!
I think it is important to march for peace, even if it is “symbolic.” It brings the community together around a common cause, and what could be more important? We have had numerous protests, demonstrations (mostly peaceful) about crime, but to no avail. Jamaica still has the 3rd highest murder rate in the world, after Honduras and El Salvador… 😦 I hope that it goes well tomorrow.
oh wow; i did not know that jamaica was so dangerous. yes, el salvador and honduras have a horrible problem.
it’s good when the community pulls together and asks, ‘what can we do about this?’

I’ve wanted to go back and visit Honduras, which I haven’t seen for over 30 years now, but the things I keep hearing about the crime there give me pause and make me think I won’t we able to go back. ¡Qué lástima!
yes, its so sad that crime has gotten out of control. i’ll never forget visiting with a group of sport fishermen from honduras when i was in belize. i asked them about crime in their country, and they told me several personal stories about corrupt policemen.
there are many beautiful people who represent honduras, and it must sadden them that their country is losing the battle against crime.
it is good for such solidarity peaceful protest to be done, it put the government on a hot sit for them to do something about it.
yes, it does call attention to the people’s concerns. it will also help bring the community closer, thought they are already pretty close! z
I always get such a sense of peace and friendliness from your posts; is crime a serious issue in your area or is this a prevention March?
how sweet of you to say that! thank you!
jama has always been known for its lack of crime, and there have been several robberies lately (during the night) i will try to get more details about how many and how often, but i’ve heard of two robberies…
about four or five months ago i heard of one more robbery, but that was when the main highways, which skirts the town, was detoured through town during ‘reconstruction.’ lots of people who normally didn’t go through town were suddenly being routed straight through our quiet oasis. i wasn’t surprised to hear about that robbery, which happened in the daytime.
Robberies are so unsettling. Such a violation of our personal space.
Hoy a las 10:AM comiensa con la misa aqui en el canton Jama
oops! i’d best not start painting this morning! thanks!

I was reminded of the Ladies in White in Cuba, protesting to bring attention to the political prisoners, and also the women in Liberia who played such a role in the fall of Charles Taylor. There’s crime, there’s war, and there are war-crimes. The same power can overcome them all.
“Pray the Devil Back to Hell”, about Liberia’s civil war, used to be on youtube in full, but it looks like PBS got it pulled. You can see a trailer here, and a glimpse of their women in white.
Crime is frightening, but there are plenty of criminals who are cowards and who will run in the face of community pressure. I hope the pressure in Jama will send them running!
