Manabi Province/Ecuador –
Yesterday while pulling tender rank growth in the shady recesses of the gardens, I noted an abnormal splash of electric color near ground level. Pausing for a closer look, this Zeebra allowed a psychedelic caterpillar to alter the next ten or so minutes of my day!
With many other tasks at hand and with sunset approaching, I said, “Goodbye,” to Senorita Caterpillar who was surely on the threshold of becoming Madam Butterfly.

Any guesses? I’ll go look for her today, but suspect that she’s munched her way over the threshold on her way to riding the wind! – Fly On, Little Wing!
Jimmy Hendrix would surely approve of pairing this circus-worthy caterpillar with his masterpiece, “Little Wing.”
“Well, she’s walking through the clouds
with a circus mind
that’s running round.
Butterflies and zebras and moonbeams
and fairy tales,
That’s all she ever thinks about –
Riding with the wind.
When I’m sad, she comes to me
with a thousand smiles.
She gives to me free.
It’s alright, she said,
it’s alright.
Take anything you want from me,
You can take anything, anything.
Fly on, little wing –
Yeah, yeah, yeah, little wing…”

Z, what a neat little creature!! Jimi would likely think he is on acid if he saw it. Scuse me while I kiss the sky….BTG
hey
i’m about to go outside, and your comment will send me searching for butterflies while remembering to kiss the sky!
caterpillars like that are often toxic to the skin, and they burn like fire for hours and hours! it’s interesting, but it takes only one encounter to remind this zebra to touch only through the lens of a camera!

Why are some of natures most beautiful things harmful? Oleander comes to mind. It reminds me of that Star Trek episode where they found Eden only everything was beautiful, lush and poisonous. Sorry for the 1960s metaphors, but you got me going with the Jimi Hendrix Experience. And, the wind cries Mary…BTG
have you written a post about jimi hendrix?
i’ve been working in the yard, and ‘little wing’ has been in my mind on repeat the entire time! today has been almost perfect- warm but not hot, sunny with strong breezes. i’ve worked through lunch and have earned this much-needed lunch break!
hope your day has been a good one!

The only one I have written is one about misunderstood lyrics – the website called “Excuse me while I kiss this guy.” I entitled it “Did Parsley save Rosemary in time? I think I did reference his cover of Bob Dylan’s song “All Along the Watchtower” which is my favorite Hendrix’ song in a tribute to Dylan.
What fantastic pictures! I hope that we can find one of these brightly lit creatures in our garden too. Isn’t it amazing the variety and creativity exhibited in even the most simple life-forms around us!
Thanks for sharing.
i should have made the effort to see where it stopped for the night. i saw no sign of it this morning.
what a beautiful day we’ve had! pleasant, sunny, windy – and i worked way too hard in the yard! it’s break time, then painting time…

“…She gives to me free…” wow what a jolt…and a good one at that!
‘Scuse me, too, while I whisper to the wind…
R.
you and btg are the best! we embrace that music that opens doors to our youth! z
What an amazing creature. With those “squared-off” sides it almost looks like a little truck. That’s probably appropriate, since it seems to have been trucking along. It doesn’t look like just any semi, though. With those colors, I’d say it’s a circus truck.
Of course you know what song that requires! Something that fits very nicely both for “dead-heading” flowers and for a caterpillar that may well be on a “long, strange trip”!
love the caterpillar’s color! 🙂 🙂 great capture
What a curious little caterpillar. What wonderful butterfly does it become, I wonder?
I had no idea about not touching some caterpillars. I need to remember that. That’s why they aren’t eaten by many predators, right? Anyway, Madam soon to be Butterfly is beautiful. I wonder what kind of butterfly she will be?
That lil guy is pretty dang colorful. It is usually the pretty ones that are the most dangerous. .. ha! I hope you are able to id, I’d be interested in knowing.
I’ve seen some really cool caterpillars, but this one! Wow – crazy!! Great choice to pair it with the Hendrix song.
thanks amiga… the song and the yet-to-be butterfly seemed to belong together.. and then there’s that zebra element to ponder!
yes, it was very unique.. hopefully it will emerge and flutter across my field of vision soon! z
