” …heavy rain induces thousands of landslides and severe erosion, which removes ground material from the Earth’s surface, releasing the stress load and encouraging movement along faults … the reduced load (can) unclamp the faults, which can promote an earthquake.” – Shimon Wdowinski, associate research professor at the UM Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science
Several days ago as Otto began creeping toward Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama, I remembered noting that strong earthquakes seem connected not only to full and new moons, but also to Hurricanes and periods of heavy rains. Doing a bit of homework, I opened two sites that discussed the earthquake-hurricane connection.
Working late with the mural-painting projects, I intended to read the stories with more focus when I had more time; the page was still on the screen when the 7.0+ quake hit El Salvador.
Here’s the link if anyone’s interested in post-turkey dinner reading material: Hurricanes-Typhoons May Trigger Earthquakes.
Meanwhile, many are watching Otto’s trek across southern Nicaragua and northern Costa Rica. May all of you have a safe evening.

From this morning – Marie in the Nicoya Penisula – Costa Rica:
” Dear Friend, Thanks for thinking of us on this Thanksgiving to be remembered. So far we are waiting and things are calm, although cloudy. Our neighborhood Thanksgiving dinner has been postponed until Saturday, my sister, brother-in-law, friend Anna have decided to not risk the visit that was scheduled to start tomorrow.
Another friend, Reggie, is still waiting for the airlines to let him know if flights will be cancelled. They are predicting lots of rain with mudslides and flooding – a major concern is getting to the airport from here to retrieve him tomorrow. I keep watching, have things put away that could fly, have lots of ice in the freezer, just in case, and emergency water available.
Now the waiting game. I will keep you posted if I have internet. We have experienced hurricanes in Pennsylvania all our lives but Costa Rica has not had one in 156 years – the panic button has been pushed but those that live here have no idea as to the possibility of a #2 hurricane!
That mural is wonderful – I look forward to seeing it in person sometime soon. “

You’re welcome, Keith.. I wish that some positive headlines would trump what’s happening in the USA… it must be difficult to endure what’s happening…

Make no mistake about it. We are NOT in control of the universe! Such a disappointing idea to the megalomaniacs among us.
Playamart - Zeebra Designs said:
Yes, you are right, though some will try their best to control Mother Nature, and efforts usualy backfire down the road.. or river….

It’s hard to find good news sometimes, Lisa. I had TV on last time and they were gravely concerned for the Great Barrier Reef and the coral wasteland. We are our own worst enemies, flocking to see them and generating more carbon in the process. Poor Mother Nature doesn’t know what to do with us!
Wishing you peace and a happy outcome, darlin. 🙂
