Tent Community between Jama and Playa El Matal (Ecuador)

Greetings to all on this USA day of Thanksgiving.    In strong contrast to those affected by world-wide unstable weather, I spent the early morning helping with finishing touches on a mural-painting “minga” near Mindo’s central park.   Students, teachers and artists worked in easy harmony over the past few days while all-but perfect sunny skies smiled upon us.

Although the experience filled me with gratitude for these lovely people who embrace foreigners into their culture, my thoughts have also been tweaked to equally-loving people in Central America who are and will be affected by Otto’s late-November visit to the area. Continue reading →

Late-November Otto & Central America

Thinking of all of you that are affected by Otto’s late-November surprise.

When I scan maps of Central America, I always spot that large Lake Nicaragua- Cocibolca (Ometepe is home to Debbie and Ron, who – ironically- were in New Zealand and experienced the recent 7.8 earthquake…)  Then I look due south to find the Nicoya Penisula where many of my friends live…. and now due east to Barra Colorado on the north-east border with Nicaragua, where my friend Dan has Rio Colorado Lodge.   Hang in there everyone…  Many will be watching from afar.

Kris out of Panama posted an update on weather in the David area. ‘Otto is Soaking Us”

(To anyone with internet there, updates are appreciated…)

Lessons to all:  Keep your homes well stocked – disasters seem to be surprising people world wide….

Love,
Z

Debbie of Retired & Rewired in Nicaragua recently posted The Decay of Dignity and triggered a memory from four or more years ago when I was passing through Rivas Nicaragua.    Rivas was my timeout spot, where I threw on the brakes and rested while making the required 72-hour ‘border exits’ out of Costa Rica to keep my passport in good standing.

Rivas Nicaragua - the Bustling Morning Market

Rivas Nicaragua – the Bustling Morning Market

I often chose Rivas over the highly-popular San Juan Del Sur because I wanted to immerse myself in a typical Nicaraguan town untainted by tourists. I usually rested the first day, ventured around the town on the second day, took the ferry to Debbie’s beloved Isla Ometepe on the third day (for lunch and to see the museum!) then prepared to return to Costa Rica on the fourth or fifth day.    Most every morning I arose with the chickens and explored the streets in search of photo moments in the early-morning light.

(Note the shoe-shine guy that’s sitting on the wooden stool.)

On several previous trips to Rivas, I crossed paths with a weathered man with a perpetual ‘fool-on-the-hill’ manner that made me wonder what drug had fried his brain, or if a lifetime of drinking home-brewed sugar cane liquor destroyed his mind a little at a time. I don’t enjoy photographing misery or the dark side of a man’s character, but this man photographed well;  he had presence!  Perhaps there was more to this man with the foolish smile?

One morning I spotted him walking up the sunny side of the street, and I stopped (on the shadow side) and prepared to photograph him as he passed.   Continue reading →

I try to keep bananas on hand to use in place of sugar when blending a natural drink.   My present favorite drink contains papaya, red hibiscus blossoms, fresh mint, maracuya (passion fruit) and the optional banana.  Since red and green make brown, the mint makes the concoction a bit ugly – but hey! – dim the lights and enjoy the flavor while your body drinks in nutrients! I often forget to strain the drinks before serving my friends, and they stare at me with this, “You really don’t expect me to drink this….. do you?” kind of look!

From Pingbacks to Pinterest to Copyright Issues

Speaking Up For Copyrights!

Speaking Up For Copyrights!

My post about the pingbacks received interesting feedback and presented new subjects to ponder about responsible blogging.   We appreciate when someone mentions one of our posts and guides the reader to us via pingback.   Everyone agrees that those are great pingbacks!  The image below shows five pending notifications of pingbacks.  The question for me is, “Are these from people who have visited my site, or will I find another person in pursuit of more hits?”

Which is real and which is borderline spam?

Which is real and which is borderline spam?

Those of us who enter the photo challenges sometimes receive a different kind of pingback,   With a right click,  a small number of bloggers copy from the challenge site and paste to theirs; this past week one of these bloggers presented one photo, no text, linked to the WordPress challenge then listed 125 sites and received 66 likes!!!!!  He also received several thanks for the pingbacks, so go figure, not everyone is bothered by these posts.

Those border on spam and join another type of borderline of spam.   Some people visit sites and leave a string of suspicious ‘likes.’  How can one hit the  ‘like, like, like, like, like’ button in a few seconds and say that they read the posts?!

This is a REAL pending pingback! See what a lovely comm

A lovely REAL comment (right) awaited my approval!!!

Linda of Shoreacres contributed sound feedback and addressed her concern about copyright infringement from re blogging    I’ve had my own brushes with copyright infringement, so I had no problem agreeing with her concerns.

Sneaky Snake

Who Wants To Challenge A Sneaky Snake? –

Years ago I was shocked to find one of my photos featured in an international magazine.   Challenging a copyright dispute is an arduous task, and several attorneys I consulted seemed to pull away as if it was taboo to challenge a well-known periodical.  I regret not pursuing that infringement violation. (Living off the grid does have its disadvantages!)

I have frowned on Facebook because one signs over licensing rights for the photos.  People have uploaded my photos without asking, and I wonder how they clear that ethical question about having permission to use the images before uploading.   Angela West of PCWorld states in a February 2012 article,  “Facebook asks each time you upload a photo if you have the permission to use it. The legal burden lies with the original person who posted the photo rather than those who share links to it.

Pinterest does not ask users to consider permissions before each “pin,” aiming to make the user experience seamless. While having your content shared arguably helps popularize it, many artists and photographers may want to be asked or paid first.”

I suspect that people do this with images found on Google searches and rarely remember to give credit (or ask permission!) before using the images.  I’ve watched someone pull up images for iguanas, find my paintings then quickly right-click without any qualms!  Others have said, “I saw the photos on facebook!”  (Facebook?) and they told how a friend right clicked from my post and uploaded to share with others.  This disturbs me a lot, though most do this with a novice’s innocence.

It all started when Luchy asked for suggestions for improvements to his cyber cafe.

It all started when Luchy asked for suggestions for improvements to his cyber cafe.

IT STARTED WITH ONE LIGHT POLE

The above post, It Started With One Light Pole, received a lot of attention and praise, and I am now slightly amused at the the irony of the title.  My most recent frustration goes back to this post, and yes, it started with one light pole!

0 day last cevallos youngest

While researching licensing and copyright infringement stories about Facebook and Pinterest, I wondered if anyone had right-clicked any of my images and posted them without my permission.  I went to the Pinterest site and typed in my name, and viola! there were some of my photos!  Most linked back to a feature article from Virtual News. that referred back to the light pole story.   Paul’s article was a nice one, though he right clicked and wrote the article without asking permission to use the images.  He DID write me and shared the link when he published it.

Someone else right clicked and wrote another article, this time with little reference back to my blog.  They did give me photo credits, but never bothered to tell me they’d used them in the post.  I found it by finding the image on google images, which took me back to that post.

Finding the images on Pinterest worried me, especially since one of the photos doesn’t have my copyright notice. (My mistake)  So next I searched “Zeebra Designs” and found a photograph of a howler monkey.  Again, full credit and a link back to the post was included, but I wonder who might right click it next into a periodical or greeting card or…?

Next I found one of my Playa San Miguel images from a search in that name, and it had two ‘repins.’  As with one of the street art, this image did not bear my copyright notice.  (My mistake again!)

I have also found images of mine that friends uploaded to Google Earth to pinpoint a location.  They surely claimed that they owned the image during the upload prompts!  (They probably thought they were doing me a favor!)  Discovering all of this sort of makes me want to butt heads with a few people!!!

Head Buttin' Time

Head Buttin’ Time

Before you right click an image, please consider the person who most likely devoted many years to hone and develop that talent.  It’s unfair to insert it into your site without giving credit and a link back to the photographer, who might or might not stumble upon it one day.    If someone else right clicks it and shares, eventually someone will assume it’s in the public domain.  That might be a grand honor for someone whose profession is outside of the arts, but it’s a huge disappointment to the artist who has worked hard to gain respect and earn an honest living!

If the issue of copyrights interests you, here are a few details:

Hibiscus isn’t JUST for tea!

WordPress Weekly Challenge asks for examples of Delicate.  Before reading the text, I thought of the delicate texture of hibiscus blossoms that often find their way into my food and drink!

While waiting for the post to load (connection speeds are often brutally slow here!) I pondered a more serious post that addressed the delicate balance between man and nature.   The story is here:  A FRAGILE BALANCE – The Decline of the Olive Ridley Sea Turtle.

OLIVE RIDLEYS nicaragua playa rosada

The turtle returned to the quiet beach, nested, returned to the sea, yet humans raided the nest!

The delicate balance between man and nature often causes dysfunction between  the rights of nature versus modern progress.  Here are a few examples that balance moments I’ve sadly witnessed against others that give hope. Continue reading →

Jake’s challenge for this week is REFLECTIONS

This week finds me reflecting on my history with things electronic;  over the past twenty or more years, I  have shorted out out random electrical items.   So many batteries on so many different watches have malfunctioned that I finally stopped wearing watches!   The one that stays tucked in my luggage continues ticking  –  two years and counting!   My finger on an elevator button, electric car window button or a copy machine ‘start’ button, at times,  triggers a malfunction.    Miguel Rendon of ESCoffee gave me a cell phone and insisted that I join the modern world and stay better connected;  on retrospect it’s a bit amusing that the phone joined the cemetery of sizzled electronics several months later!   Are there demons lurking in the shadows? Sunset from Park Avenue Villas

San Juan del Sur endeared itself to me in 2001 when I consulted a pictorial map in Rivas and saw the symbols for food and lodging where a road ended at the Pacific coast. The sleepy little town town’s picturesque front street was a mix between classic Pacific post card and Colonial American architecture.  I liked it instantly.

Walking one street back from the harbor, I felt as if I had stepped onto the set of a Hollywood ghost town! The streets were swept clean, and the empty buildings were basic and unpainted, yet dripped with character.

“I wish I had enough money to buy the entire town!” I exclaimed to my friends when I returned to Costa Rica. Continue reading →

Needing privacy and isolation to work on a deadline last year, I stayed at Casa Rosada, part of the Rancho Santana Project along Nicaragua’s southern Pacific Coast.  Mike, the owner of Casa Rosada, suggested that I draw a Zeebra Map for the area, which presented several unexpected problems.  While I slowly explored the 4-wheel drive backroads, the sleepy area from Hacienda Iguana to La Salinas fast endeared itself to my senses!

Quickly discovering there were no decent maps of the area, (most showed the entire area as “POPOYO”) I slowly plotted the curves of the roads and noted points of interest while a friend navigated the bumpy and often-muddy roads.  The map incubated as we explored side roads, stopped for sodas or inquired about locations.   The locals gladly nudged us along, though finding correct names of beaches and where one community started while another ended was one big question mark!
