P1920021 timeout for art botanical

All of us are watchers – of television, of time clocks, of traffic on the freeway – but few are observers. Everyone is looking, not many are seeing. (Peter M. Leschak)

Look over my shoulder and see through my eyes!  The flowers in my friends’ Mindo (Ecuador) gardens were the inspiration for this 38 x 54″ painting in progress.  Drawing and painting from life forces us to examine what’s in front of us, and we learn to see instead of guessing what we see! Late Afternoon Break-

Late Afternoon Break-

Lo siento, (I’m sorry!)  I apologize in advance for veering a bit off course for this week’s story alphabet via Spanish words.  How can I not include Panama’s unique Kuna Indians in this challenge?

Mola Textiles made by the Kuna Indians of Panama

Mola Textiles made by the Kuna Indians of Panama

When I  lived in Costa Rica, I often visited my friend Barbara, who lives in the “Amador” area  of Panama where the Panama Canal merges into the Pacific Ocean.    The Kuna Indians’ unique ‘mola textiles’ colored the artisan markets in that area, and I always paused to admire the rich colors and finely-crafted works of art.

My interest at the time was on stained-glass windows, and I was preparing to capture the beauty of stained glass in watercolors.   The first ‘Mola” concept was a collective project to nudge Barbara out of a painting block.   I sketched the design, and she and her daughter Bobbe and I floated the colors with a relaxed ease. Happily Immersed in the Andean city of Guaranda Ecuador, Lisa Brunetti critiques just-shot images of red-caped Indians. (Photo by Marie Groff)

WordPress hurled a curve ball today!   Thankfully the challenge works well with my life as an artist, naturalist and blogger.  Finding images for this challenge was an easy task!

“We want to know what inspires you. For this special mid-week photo challenge, we want to see portraits of you doing something that inspires you to blog  …  Show us photos of yourself doing things that inspire you to blog. Have a cooking blog? Let’s see you in the kitchen. Run a fitness blog? We want to see you in action. ”

The above instructions used the words “portraits, photos’ and “doing THINGS,” so I jumped in with both feet and retrieved images that reflect those requests!

What inspires me?  What doesn’t inspire me?!  The byline on my main blog states, “An Artist’s Eyes Never Rest.”   Continue reading →

We Did This!

This Man’s Journey shares his love and devotion for his family through sensitive writings.   In this week’s Image of Life post –  A Lifetime of Memories,  he shares stories about his family’s recent trip to Florida. I  had never heard of Legoland, but thanks to his post, I took a brief journey there through the magic of cyberspace!

Memories;  my friend Maruja and I have been painting this week.  I told her that years later she would look at her painting and recall details and events that happened while we were working on that art: Continue reading →

As I prepared to leave Cruzita for a long weekend at home (aka to build a goat-proof fence!) I saw this week’s Photo Challenge:  Create.

The query asked, “Have you snapped a picture of something you’ve created, or something someone else has created? ‘

I chuckled! What have I NOT photographed lately that wasn’t related to being creative?   I smiled, decided that the ‘next’ bus out of Cruzita would be just fine, and I began the arduous task of deciding which photos to share! (Or deciding which ones NOT to share!) Continue reading →

Precolombian Mola Series (Watercolor)

This new painting style startles me at times!  Inspired by the Mola textiles of Panama’s Kuna Indians, it was also influenced by my love of pre-Columbian artifacts.  This series continues to evolve, and the subject matter sometimes takes control and dictates the painting’s direction.

Traditional “Antigua” Design with Butterfly – Watercolor – 11″ x 15″

"Museum Guardians" (Culture: Jama Coaque-Ecuador) - Watercolor - 11" x 16"

“Museum Guardians” (Jama Coaque/Ecuador) Watercolor 11″ x16″

(The series also inspired the “I CAN DO THIS” painting workshops.)

This PDF summary provides a retrospective summary of the first 14 paintings of series. Continue reading →
