“When one is alone at night in the depths of these woods, the stillness is at once awful and sublime. Every leaf seems to speak.”  – – John of the Mountains: The Unpublished Journals of John Muir, (1938)

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

From the 2nd-floor balcony – The tree is loaded, but for only ten days or so….

The days have been full helping Jim (and the cats) prepare to fly to the USA, but there are flowers in the garden that awaken when I am normally sleeping! The blooming period is quite sort, so at night I work on the studies while most people in Ecuador are sleeping!  Nearby Rio Cinto provides a subtle backdrop of sound, though there is a hushed stillness aside from random moths fluttering at the windows.    Every so often an insect finds its way to my work area – maybe in hopes of having its portrait made with the flowers?

Look who came to critique! A lightning bug!

Look who came to critique! A lightning bug!

Before focusing on the main subject, I usually work on a smaller study.   The upper and lower views of a  black/brown and white butterfly provided perfect challenges on different evenings. Continue reading →

P1840208 BUTTERFLY RAINBOW  Google Definition of Dud:  “Noun – A thing that fails to work properly or is otherwise unsatisfactory or worthless.”

Ecuador – The claro USB modem internet system is a dud!  It receives no signal at my friends’ property, and in “Mindo Proper” it receives a signal, opens pages slowly, but will not send an email!  Sigh, Paradise DOES have its frustrations! Continue reading →

P1830330 path clematis

“Nature will bear the closest inspection. She invites us to lay our eye level with her smallest leaf, and take an insect view of its plain”  Thoreau

P1830331 path clematis

Mindo Ecuador – My friends and I walked part of their property this past week, and we noted a clematis-like vine that sprawled along a damp ditch and climbed across anything in its path. Stopping to inspect a butterfly with delicate glass-like wings, we discovered a treasure of insects we might have otherwise missed. Continue reading →

What's Unique About Hermit Crabs?

Nature inspires much of my art!

The Daily Prompt nudged me into another hard-to-resist post.    “Photographers, artists, and poets: show us NATURE.”

They know about the jaguar that escorted me home one full-moon night!

A jaguar escorted me home one full-moon night!

I could post daily and never run out of thoughts, stories and images about nature! Every so often man literally bulldozes his way through nature, and my heart breaks with each tree that is needlessly destroyed.  Years ago I witnessed this when the old-growth trees were felled on a petite island that once belonged to my grandfather.   The owner, a close friend of our family,  left the island to a well-known conservation group, so that it would always be a wildlife haven.  The group quickly sold it, and the new owners toppled the timber like dominoes. Guayaquil (Ecuador) Botanical Gardens/Malecon

Ah! To bask in silence!     A serene setting wraps its loving arms around us and cocoons us in delicious silence!  Libraries offer comforting slices of silence, as do museums; parks and botanical gardens provide visual balms for the soul and reconnect us with nature.  Silence allows our minds to grow quiet, and our senses awaken.

For Jake’s Sunday Post Challenge of “Silence,”  here is an essay that I wrote when I lived “immersed in nature” in Costa Rica. Continue reading →
