Jama Ecuador (Manabi Province)
Last Saturday when I was running a new water line to the kitchen sink, a friend stopped by with a message, “Lisa, President Correa will be speaking in Jama at ten o’clock this morning.” Abandoning my task, I focused on getting to town in time to witness the event!
Five minutes later, the owner of the pond gave me a ride to town, and I took one grand total-immersion step into the crowd.
Click your heels together…
Step into the scene and join me in a people-watching session:
Surely this was a record-breaking turnout; mixed into the sea of faces were many of my friends and peers.
President Correa gave a 3-hour summary about positive improvements to different provinces throughout the country. Photo presentations illustrated the high points of his speech, from continued improvements to schools, medical facilities, construction and festivals. I did not hear him address the dilemma of the vanishing beaches/ potential loss of properties. Hopefully he toured El Matal before leaving Jama.
Those who were able to stay until the end were rewarded with a finale of candids…
I am using the very-slow USB internet, and we lost power about fifteen minutes ago, so I am going to hit “Publish” before the battery dies!
When the presentation was finished, the crowds quickly scattered, the police forces boarded their buses, and within fifteen minutes, the stage crew was dismantling and loading the portable auditorium onto the trucks.
Happy weekend, everyone!

Lisa, great photos! Will you be commenting on what the gist of the address by the president was about? Did he address the coast erosion at all? Keep up the good work!

You have to like the hat salesman. I hope he sold his inventory on his head.

Wow, great batch of photos of your community. I particularly love #8, I think,of the little boy beside his parents, watching so intently. I also love the red shoes and the hat seller and the snake charmer….Well, there were a bunch I loved, but those in particular. Well done!

I love that photo of the red shoes. It is such a contradiction to where she is seated showing the dry ground. Why the snake at this event? Was it being relocated from the grounds where the President was speaking?

Except for that crazy internet connection you have, I wouldn’t mind being in your country about now. Our whole country seems to be going crazy! The photos are wonderful. I spotted the guy with the hats in an earlier photo before you highlighted him, and I was wondering if someone was selling. And was that one of those kids’ bouncy set-ups I saw?
Really, just a wonderful collection of photos. You captured the day well!

the world news makes my heart heavy.. there are so many angry or paranoid people…
there were so many unique photo ops that i kept forgetting to listen to the president.. his speech lasted about three hours as he summarized what was happening from province to province.
